Look, we get it, roof ventilation is often overlooked because most people are simply more worried about their roof keeping their home dry. However, a well-ventilated roof can make life easier and more comfortable for those living beneath it. Proper roof and attic ventilation can lower heating and cooling costs, improve interior comfort, and grant longer life to roof shingles.
In the summertime, a properly ventilated roof allows hot air in the attic to escape, reducing the demand on your air conditioning system. In the winter, ventilation combines with good attic insulation to keep the roof surface cold, so that snow won’t melt on the roof surface and then freeze to form ice dams along the eaves.
Armor Xteriors installs and repairs ridge vents and other types of roof vents. We are Chattanooga & North Georgia’s expert roofing contractors for roofing solutions that include roof repair, roof replacement and more.
There are different types of roof vents, and different strategies for achieving effective roof ventilation. Here’s a brief overview:
- Ridge Vents
- Soffit vents
- Gable-end vents
- Powered attic ventilators (PAVs)
Add roof vents to ensure a long-lasting roof over your head
If your roof is not well-ventilated, improve its ventilation with ridge, soffit or gable-end vents. All can be installed in an existing roof, or when your roofing is being replaced.
The specialists at Armor Xteriors can help you choose the correct type of roof vents for your home in order to obtain a balanced attic ventilation system.

Due to the quality standards of today’s manufacturing processes, it is highly unlikely that you will have a problem with your roof shingles. In the rare case that you do it’s important that you understand the standard warranties that protect your roof. Read more
If you’ve ever walked into the stuffy confines of a room that’s been completely closed for a lengthy period, you know air tends to stay in place. You also know that just opening a door or window doesn’t solve the problem immediately. A flow of air must be established to produce the air exchange needed to remove all the stale air. That’s what an efficient ventilation system must do — provide a steady, high volume of air movement. Read more
Your homes roof is no inexpensive repair but if you’re considering replacing or repairing your roof, fall is typically the best time for roof installation or repair services.
If you’re thinking about replacing or repairing your roof in the Chattanooga area, it’s best to wait for the fall for the following reasons:
- End of the stormy season. Although Chattanooga weather can be quite erratic, fall is typically the end of bad weather. Severe weather events that damage roofs are far more likely during the spring and summer. Fall is a great time to assess any damage that may have occurred during the stormy months and determine what roofing services are necessary.
- Conditions are great. It’s pretty well established that roofing is best installed when the temperature is between 45F to 50F. This is particularly true if your roofers are installing asphalt shingles, the most commonly used type of roofing material. Temperate temperatures help facilitate better thermal sealing of asphalt shingles, ensuring that they firmly adhere to the roof. Also, cooler fall temperatures make work more comfortable for the professionals installing or repairing your roof.
- Cold winter temperatures make shingles more difficult to work with. When temperatures are cold, shingles tend to become brittle and more likely to break when roofers are nailing them to the roof. They often have to put aside their roofing guns and hand nail shingles, causing delays and higher costs.
- Proper sealing. By getting the work done in the fall, new shingles have enough time to adequately bond to the roof before wet winter weather arrives (assuming Chattanooga gets any cold weather). This helps them better insulate your home from cold temperatures and moisture.
- Storm season may start back up in winter. Winter storms can exacerbate existing damage to a roof, causing holes to get larger or leaks to worsen. If you live in an area prone to snow, the weight of snowfall on an already-compromised roof can cause expensive damage.
- Save on heating. By replacing your roof in the fall, you’ll be able to benefit from a better insulated home in the cold winter months which will help reduce heating bills, helping to offset a small part of the cost of renovations or repairs.

The key to your dream roof is finding the right roofing company in Chattanooga for your job. It’s vital to know that you can rely on the roofing contractor to give you good advice about products and procedures that may be new to you.
A top-notch, professional roofing contractor will be happy to answer the questions within. And just as it makes sense to receive several bids on your roofing job, it also makes sense to ask each contractor these questions. We’ve also outlined some important points to consider as you evaluate the terms of your proposed contract.
Being certain you’ve selected the right roofing contractor will ensure that you have a quality roof overhead and that your money has been wisely spent.
How To Choose Your Roofing Contractor
Allow yourself an hour, more or less, to sit down with each contractor.
You might be speaking with a salesperson or even the owner. Good contractors take pride in their work, and so should the salesperson representing the company.
The salesperson should show pride and enthusiasm in discussing other jobs, and should be knowledgeable about other jobs (which shows his amount of involvement in the work).
7 Questions To Ask Your Roofing Contractor
How can you tell if a contractor is a true professional who will stand behind his work? While there is not a single, clear-cut answer, there are a number of indicators that you can look for when going through the evaluation process.
1. What is the full name and address of the company?
Getting the complete address of the company can be an important factor in determining a company’s time in business. If a post office box is given, ask for a full street address as well. Try to hire a contractor that has an office nearby. The likelihood of better service and quicker response time is greater if the company is based near your home.
2. Does the company carry insurance?
A contractor should carry comprehensive liability insurance and workers’ compensation insurance to protect you in the event of a roofing accident. This can be verified by asking to see the contractor’s certificates of insurance (workers’ compensation and general liability). Let the contractor know you want current certificates sent to you by the insurer before the job is started. Contractors may also carry other kinds of insurance, including health, life and auto. Deceptive assurances of insurance coverage may refer to these. Don’t be confused. Ask for proof of general liability and workers’ compensation* coverage for roofing projects.
3. Is the company a licensed or credentialed contractor?
Not all states require contractors to be licensed. If your state does license contractors, then they might have to pass a written examination in their specialty, although few licenses make this a requirement.
A number of cities also require professional licensing. Check with your local licensing authority for details.
A contractor may also answer this question by telling you he has a business license. However, a business license is a tax requirement and is not directly relevant to the contractor’s competence.
4. How long has the company been in business?
Needless to say, longer is usually better. Under three years may signal an unstable business or one low on the learning curve. On the other hand, everybody has to start somewhere. References will be helpful to double check any business, and are especially important when dealing with a new business.
A newer business may have a great future but it is only reasonable to be more careful when considering its referrals. The failure rate of small businesses in the first three years is high.
5. Will the company provide referrals or references from previous jobs?
Ask for photos of completed work, if available. Keep in mind, however, that many roofers will not have photos. Request a list of 10 names and phone numbers of recent customers (from the last 12 months). It is not necessary to check all 10, but you will be able to pick randomly from the list those you do call.
6. What is the company’s workmanship warranty?
Typically, contractor workmanship warranties are for one year or more. Longer warranties are not necessarily more valuable than shorter warranties. The length of the warranty is less important than the intent and ability of the roofer to stand behind their warranty. That is best evaluated using customer referrals.
Ask customers specifically for information about these four things:
- Did they perform their work on a timely basis?
- Were they responsive when asked for information and changes?
- Did they act as if they cared about the customer’s interests?
- And finally, would you call the company trustworthy?
Usually, problems of either workmanship or material show up very quickly. Therefore, the near-term warranty given by the contractor or manufacturer is more important than the warranty coverage during the later years of the warranty.
7. What is the company’s track record for solving customer complaints?
Try to find out how your contractor handles problems when they do arise. Request a referral from a job that involved a complaint.
Ask the contractor if they ever lost a job related court case, or if their contractor’s license has ever been suspended and why. Also, in talking to the appropriate authorities, such as the Better Business Bureau and licensing departments, find out if any complaints have been filed against the contractors whom you have interviewed.
Many contractors in business for any length of time have been involved in a dispute. Ask how the dispute was resolved, to test your contractor’s reputation.

Wondering if your home is ready for a new roof? Residential replacement is something most Chattanooga homeowners will face at some point in their lifetime. From minor cracks to full shingle replacement, repairs are a common resolution to roofing problems. However, it is important to know the signs that your roof is completely beyond a patch up and requires a replacement by a professional Chattanooga roofing contractor. Often times, a full replacement may only cost slightly more than a repair but will save you more money in the long run. Knowing these signs can help you get it replaced faster and keep your family comfortable knowing that a sturdy roof rests over their heads.
How Old is Your Roof?
Even though a roof is built to last a long time, it is not built to last a lifetime. After you have purchased your home, or ideally before, determine when it was installed or last replaced. So what kind of answer am I looking for? Well, the average system needs to be replaced every 20-25 years. Simply knowing that is’s past its “due date” or is approaching it, is enough for you to schedule an inspection and begin preparations for a replacement.
Is Your Ceiling Starting To Sag?
A sagging roof is a major safety issue for the people living in the home and in certain cases, it could actually collapse. This actually points to even larger problems involved with your home such as foundation issues or structural problems. Only a professional like the team at Armor Xteriors of Chattanooga will be able to determine your exact problem.
Do You See Sunlight In Your Attic?
It’s always a great idea to inspect your roof on a regular basis and one of the items on your checklist should be to inspect the attic. If you go up into the attic and notice rays of light flowing through, you may have some roof replacement plans ahead of you.
Every homeowner has the desire to show off some lush landscaping, however, landscaping your roof is generally a problem. When moss begins to form on your rooftop, this is often a problem that goes ignored. However, moss has the ability to form a thick surface that holds excess moisture on your roof. This damages your shingles and so does the removal process if done too late.
Damage to Your Roof Valleys
Leaks are an obvious sign that there is a problem with your valleys. Your valleys are the portion of your roof that move rain and snow into your gutters. After years of use, they will most likely develop some wear and begin to spring some serious leaks. A professional roofing company will be able to help you determine what is going on with your roof and if you do, in fact, need a roof replacement.

August to September is ideal for taking care of housekeeping home improvement issues and can be a great time to repair or replace your old roof.
The sooner you catch problems with your roof, the better. If you catch small damages early, the repairs will likely be much cheaper and less extensive. The longer you wait, the more likely it will be for the damage to spread and become a much larger problem to deal with. Delaying roof repairs can result in major damage to the structure and foundation of your house, so keep up the good condition of your roof on a regular basis!
We encourage Chattanooga homeowners to be proactive about their roof maintenance and to keep an eye on the state of the roof themselves. Some damage, like broken or missing shingles, can be obvious to the naked eye. Other damage isn’t as visible.
