Meteorologists never can’t provide a clear forecast for what type of winter we’ll be having in Chattanooga. For our part, we keep you informed so you can prepare your home or building from the snow and the cold weather. This time, we’re taking a closer look at the most common culprit behind winter roof damage: ice dams.
Dam That Ice
Ice dams typically form after heavy snowfall or precipitation and several days of extreme cold. These can damage or displace shingles, which could then cause leaks.
When snow or ice on the roof melts, it trickles down into the cold gutter and freezes, which creates a blockage, or a “dam”. The melting can happen even in cold weather when heat from the building reaches the roof.
As the blockage continues to enlarge, water and ice back up under the shingles and re-freeze, creating openings. The trapped water and ice then seeps through the roof, plaster, the ceiling then into the home.
How To Protect Your Roof
The best protection against ice dams is still prevention, but if it already got into the shingles or the gutter, break it up carefully but do not use anything sharp that may damage your exterior.
To prevent the snow and ice from backing up, keep the roof, gutters, and downspouts clear even before the snow falls. Keep the roof cold by ensuring warm air is not leaking into the ceiling and attic. Seal plumbing vents and electrical wires, and boost attic insulation.
It’s best to do repair or maintenance works on the roof before bad weather comes blowing in. Whether its for a home, small store, or a commercial building, we offer a range of services for all your roofing needs. Get in touch with us today for efficient services that deliver great results.
You can put off some home repairs indefinitely, but a leaky roof isn’t one of them. Cracked, curled, or missing roof shingles demand immediate attention; if neglected, they can lead to severe water (and savings-account) damage.
Before you risk life and limb on a ladder, we recommend you stay at ground level and use binoculars to spot cracked, curled, or missing shingles—often signs that your roof is in need of repair or replacement.
If you need a new roof, and two layers of roofing are already in place, building codes require stripping the roofing down to the sheathing. Most homes are strong enough to support two layers of roofing, but installing some of the heavier laminated shingles over even a single layer may overstress rafters and other structural parts of your home. If you are considering doubling up, check the manufacturer’s warranty of the new roofing material to make sure it covers that type of usage.
Another important reason to consider complete removal before re-roofing is to have your roofer check for rot, water damage, or insect infestation underneath.
Whenever a new roof is installed—or if old shingles are being removed—you’ll need new underlayment (roofing felt) to create a moisture barrier between the roofing and the wood sheathing and rafters underneath. The sheathing may also have to be replaced if it’s damaged.

Do I Need To Replace My Entire Roof If I Find a Leak?
Not always. A Leaky roof can be a result of flashings that have become loose or a section of the roof has been damaged. However, a total roof failure is generally irreversible and results from improper installation or choice of materials. Make sure to contact roofing contractor who will come out and properly diagnose whether the situation needs immediate repair or not. At Armor Xteriors we will always be honest about whether work needs to be done, and if a total roof needs to be installed, we will work with you to get the financing that fits your budget.
Do I Have To Tear Off My Old Roof?
Most roofing material manufacturers consider it best practice to tear off all old roofing if possible in order to inspect the decking underneath. Depending on what materials were used in the old layers of roofing, it is sometimes impossible to install a new roof over the old. The appearance would be less than acceptable.
How Long Can I Expect My Roof To Last?
The condition and lifespan of your roof heavily depends on the type of roof you choose, weather, and maintenance which your roof has received. Roofing manufacturers offer a variety of warranties on their products, so take a look at the warranties on their products to see what responsibilities and financial obligations they will assume if their products fail to reach their expected lifetime

Owning a home requires regular maintenance and repair work and you need to consider the ROI for your money and homeowners in the Chattanooga area regularly make the decision to invest in a new roof for their home.
Most people do not even think about the idea of installing a new roof until it starts to leak or when it starts falling apart, which is understandable given that a new roof can be quite expensive. Because of the cost, homeowners will try and delay the repairs as long as possible. But sometimes it makes sense to complete the project now instead of waiting.
If you are trying to decide on new roof, you should consider some of these benefits:
Did you know that an old roof can risk the safety of your family! Over time, a roof will start to deteriorate because of harsh weather elements. This leads to water damage, which has a domino effect on many other aspects of your property.
Eventually, the walls, insulation and the ceiling of your home could buckle and fall apart. If the roof isn’t keeping out the water each time it rains, that water will damage your home.
Another serious safety factor is mold growth. When moisture leaks in and sits in the insulation, ceiling, and walls, it could cause mold to grow and spread through your home. Mold can cause serious health issues for your family.
New roofs can help with insulation of the property, which in turn boosts the energy efficiency of your home. You might notice a decrease in your utility bills after the installation is complete.
You will also see your property value go up. If you are planning to sell in the future, the appraiser will increase the price because of the new, high-quality roof.
Warranty and Maintenance Plans
Even with a new roof, there is a still a possibility that something could go wrong in the future. But installing a new roof resets the warranty and maintenance plan. If you run into any issues, you can contact the roofing contractor for assistance. At Armor Xteriors, we offer affordable financing options to help you get what you need for the price you can afford.
